![]() The strategic partnership agreements with Aalto University, Chalmers University of Technology and the Royal Institute of Technology were signed recently and are valid until further notice. All the involved parties will benefit from that. – If we can make the forest industry a more attractive workplace, it will attract more students to apply to the technical education programmes of the universities. – There are so many interesting opportunities within our industry, says Lars Häggström, EVP Human Resources of Stora Enso. The partnership agreements also target the improvement of competence development within Stora Enso and an increase in student recruitment to those universities. – This collaboration with leading engineering universities will support Stora Enso's transformation into a renewable materials company and allow us to further advance our positions in the field of innovation. – The aim is to leverage the agreements in order to tie our own research resources closer to these universities, says Markus Mannström, Chief Technology Officer of Stora Enso. The priority competence areas for research collaboration are bio-based chemistry, process solutions, digitalisation, material science and design. The strategic partnerships will result in concrete collaboration projects, based on needs identified in close dialogue between the management of Stora Enso and the respective university management. The aim of the agreements is to strengthen collaboration between Stora Enso and leading academic institutes through long-term competence development, joint research and innovation incubation. This makes it an innovative labelling solution based on renewable raw materials.Stora Enso has signed strategic partnership agreements with three of the leading technical universities in Sweden and Finland. ![]() InnoMould is ideal for injection-moulding processes used to produce everything from pots for yoghurt and dairy products, containers for processed fish and butter and even paint buckets. InnoMould has also successfully undergone extensive testing under real-life conditions. That makes it possible to achieve the kind of realistic aesthetics that are important for maximum advertising impact at the POS, especially when it comes to foodstuffs and luxury items. InnoMould supports the use of high-resolution visuals and any desired number of different colours, including gold and silver. Outstanding printing results are a further important benefit. That means brand owners can easily achieve a significant reduction in the percentage of non-renewable materials in their packaging. The higher bearing pressure of the pot permits higher stacking and the walls of the pots can be produced with up to 50% less material. The paper combines with the plastic melt to an integral unit that is much stiffer than packaging made using a conventional film label. The special properties of InnoMould also result in additional benefits. With the new “InnoMould” paper produced at Uetersen mill, the film label can now be replaced by a paper label, reducing the amount of material of fossil origin. In the past, this process involved placing a printed film label – as the carrier of information, brand and advertising – in the mould before injecting plastic melt to create a finished pot. Every day, literally millions of packages – for the most part made of polypropylene – are produced using this technology. Stora Enso succeeded in developing a speciality paper that will enable the industry to reduce the share of non-renewable material required for packaging produced in injection-moulding processes. The facility includes an 8,000m2 warehouse and a cogeneration plant which provides steam and electricity. Construction of the facility started in 1964 with operations commencing in 1968. ![]() It produces 160,000t of white lined chipboard (WLC) annually from recycled fibres. Stora Enso initiated a change process called Rethink that calls for a paradigm shift: To rethink the old and expand to the new to offer customers innovative solutions based on renewable materials. Stora Enso owns a mill in Castellbisbal, situated 20km from Barcelona in Spain.
